Introduction Legend of Malaysia: P.Ramlee

  P.Ramlee a familiar name that every Malaysian will know. P.Ramlee is his stage name, his real name is Tengke Zakaria Tenku Nyak Putih. He use this stage name since he was 18years old. He also be grant as Datuk Sri Amar Dr. He is a historical people in Malaysia which he bring reputation for in Malaysia history. P.Ramlee a famous film actor, director, singer, songwriter, composer and producer in end of 40's and 50's until 60's and 70's. He is talented front of stage and behind the scene. The most impressive is he having acted in 65 films and sung 390 songs.


  P.Ramlee was born in Penang on the 22nd of March 1929. He born at his granmother's house and now opened as P.Ramlee house in Penang. P.Ramlee's father Teuku Nyak Puteh is a Indonesian, was a sailor from Acheh, Indonesia. Another side, his mother Che Mah Hussain was a native of Malaysia from Seberang Prai, Penang. He educate in Penang Free School which is the first school in Malaysia.


  P.Ramlee born from a normal family but he try harder to achieve his dream. Eventhought, P.Ramlee are lack of formal training in performing arts but this is not a stumbling block to achieve his dream. P.Ramlee has award many of winning film and that are Anakku Sazali (My Son Sazali), Hang Tuah(Legand of Hang Tuah), Ibu Mertuaku (My Mother-in-Law), Madu Tiga (Three Wives) and etc.


  When he is 13 years old he starting his familiarization in the musical arts which is the ukulele and violin were among the early instruments he took up. He showed his musical gifts with contemporary sounds and melodious ‘Keroncong’ tunes together with his friends. It was through this that he get his first commission from Radio Malaya to entertain at social gatherings and events around Penang. P. Ramlee would often be accompanied by a band when having every presentation. His first song is ‘Aziazah’, it was named by a girl of his fancy and it written by 1945. The song first published at Agricultural Fair in Bukit Mertajam in June 1948.


  The awesome new voice reached the ears of BS Rajhans a well-known film director from Singapore. BS Rajhans invited P.Ramlee work in at the studios for a Malay film production in Singapore. This offer make a big change in P.Ramlee’s life. Grabbing the open door, P. Ramlee moving to Singapore and start his new life.


  In Singapore, the background of Malay film are sing by P.Ramlee. At the same time he works as a crew in occasion of behind the scene. In the fullness of time, P.Ramlee interest in acting and try to get a role in film. After his superiors auditioned he get a small part of film. The first film in which P. Ramlee had a role in was Chinta, released in 1948. After he acting in some 20 films, P.Ramlee ventured into film direction, with his first effort Penarik Beca which was released in 1955. In Singapore, he had chance to direct 16 films. After that he came back to Malaysia and career development in 1964. He created another 18 movies, starting with SI TORA HARIMAU JADIAN and ending with LAKSAMANA DO RE MI in 1972.


  Apart from his acting and directing, P. Ramlee was also noted as a composer, lyricist and arranger. He is an artist that different with others, he know and can do many things media. During his lifetime he wrote some 1000 songs, because P.Ramlee are influence by Osman Ahmad and Yusof B. which are strengths in musical arrangements.

  One of his many advantages was his ability to deliver his own songs personally, either in solo or in duet with other singers such as Saloma and Normadiah.  This had the effect of leaving a greater impact on the audiences. If Azizah was his first song, then his swansong must surely be Air Mata Di Kuala Lumpur, written not long before he leave this world.

HISTORY OF P RAMLEE

Teuku Zakaria Bin Teuku Nyak Puteh(P. Ramlee) was borned in his grandma's home at 40A Counter Hall in Penang, Malaysia on the main day of the Eid celebration, which fell on 22 March 1929.Presently it opened as P. Ramlee House and known as Jalan P. Ramlee, in Georgetown, Penang. His dad Teuku Nyak Puteh Bin Teuku Karim, was a mariner from Lhokseumawe in Aceh, Indonesia while his mom, Che Mah Binti Hussein, started from Kubang Buaya, Seberang Prai, Penang. P Ramlee additionally had a stepbrother named Sheik Ali Mohamad conceived of his mom's past marriage.

He got instruction from a few schools, for example, the Kampung Jawa Malay School and Francis Light English School.. During World War II, he proceeded with his learns at the Japanese Navy School Kaigun Gakko and he was exceptionally dynamic in games, exceeding expectations especially in badminton, sepak takraw and football and he also had brief chance to familiarize himself with the Japanese Language and Music. P ramlee's enthusiasm for music started at a youthful age, having formed a band called Teruna Sekampung, Orkes Mutiara and the Bintang Sore. The principal tune he made was none other than AZIZAH. It was composed in 1945 and committed to his first love which push him on the limit towards fame. He gave the tune its first open airing at an Agricultural Fair in Bukit Mertajam in June 1948. Around then, B.S. Rajhans, a Singaporean chief scouting for abilities, and in a split second asked Ramlee and his companion Sukardi on the off chance that they would be keen on a screen test for the Shaw Brothers' Malay Film Production.His last song, "Air Mata di Kuala Lumpur" (Tears in Kuala Lumpur) was composed in 1973. It was released posthumously in an album bearing the same title. The track was sung by his wife, Saloma, and the lyrics depict his crushed feelings and disappointment upon his return to Malaysia after leaving Singapore.

P ramlee was married three times. His first wife was Junaidah, little girl of performing artist Daeng Haris. Married in the mid 1950's and separated in 1954. In February 1955, he wedded the second time to Noorizan Mohd Noor in 1955 and they were separated in 1961. P. Ramlee later took to the fanciful artist Salmah Ismail a.k.a Saloma. They got hitched in November 1961. The marriage endured till his demise. He had seven kids altogether three of whom were received and one a stepson conceived of Saloma.


In transit from house to Kuala Lumpur Hospital ,he kicked the bucket of a heart assault on 29 May 1973 5.30 a.m. (Tuesday) at 44 years old years. He was covered at the Muslim burial ground of Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur.

P Ramlee was a Malaysian film actor,director,singer,songwriter,composer and producer.Because of his commitments to the film and music industry and his scholarly work,he is frequently viewed as the symbol of Malay amusement in
Malaysia,Singapore,Brunei and Sumatra,Indonesia.In his short,colourful career in the entertainment industry,Tan Sri P.Ramlee directed 54 films,acted in 62 films,wrote 359 songs and sang more than 200 of them.

Seven years after his acting career started,P.Ramlee directed his first film,Panerek Becha in 1955.In 1957,he appeared in the first of his Bujang Lapok comedic films ,where he acted alongside Aziz Sattar and S.Shamsuddin.The Bujang Lapok tetralogy series are still popular among contemporary Malay film audience.

MUSICS

In 1947,P.Ramlee won the first place in a singing competition organised by the Penang Radio.
The violin was an instrument well loved by P.Ramlee. Seen here is a photograph of him holding a violin in a post with his early band Teruna Sekampung,in Pulau Pinang .The band comprised P.Ramlee ,Said and Ismail and Mohd Noor.

The first song he composed was none other than AZIZAH. It was composed in 1945 and committed to his first love which push him on the edge towards fame. He gave the song its first public airing at an Agricultural Fair in Bukit Mertajam in June 1948.

The lyric of the song is written by P.Ramlee's own handwriting complete with his signature.It tells the story of love between two people from diffeent society levels.
